Cultures
South Africans come from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. You will find that Capetonians are happy, friendly, hospitable people.
Languages
South Africa has 11 official languages. However, English is spoken throughout the country.
Transport/Roads
South Africa has a well-maintained road system. Public Transport however, is not very regular. In Cape Town, mini bus taxis are frequent and cheap. There are plenty of private taxis. Rikki's are semi private taxis and are a great way to get around. The bus service from our school to the Waterfront is regular and reliable. The train can be used during the day but should be avoided in the evenings. There are several long distance coaches, these are not expensive. Car hire is also relatively cheap in South Africa.
Shops
These are open from 8.30am - 5.30pm in most areas. Saturday shopping hours are usually the same as weekdays. On Sunday, most shops are either closed or close at 2.00pm. The Waterfront has extended shopping hours and closes at 9:00pm
Tipping In Restaurants
It is common practice to tip 10% of the bill.
Banking And Credit Cards
All major credit cards are accepted in big towns and there are plenty of ATM machines in shopping centers and on main roads. It is unlikely that small places in the country, cafes or roadside markets will have credit card facilities. Petrol cannot be purchased with a credit card.
Banking hours
Weekdays: 9:00am - 3:30 pm
Saturdays: 8:00am - 11.30 am
Money can be changed at the bank, or at Rennies. Rennies moneyline will give you the latest exchange rates call: 0861 11 11 77

Communication
There are plenty of internet cafes near the school. You can use this service for as little as R7.00 an hour. Cards for public telephones are obtainable from the school.

Climate
The Western Cape climate is mild with winter rainfall. This makes for beautiful long hot evenings in the summer months.
Health
Sunscreen with a protection factor of 15 or higher is necessary for protection against ultra violet radiation (UV). We recommend that you purchase travel insurance before you arrive because South Africa has no National Health System.
Pharmacies will give you excellent advice. Mpumalanga, the Northern Province and parts of KwaZulu Natal are considered malaria regions. There is no malaria in Cape Town.
Vat Refund
14% VAT is included in the price of goods purchased. You can claim VAT back on certain goods purchased here, when you leave the country. You will have to produce the tax invoice of the purchase.
Crime
Cape Town is a safe city but please follow these guidelines:
* Do not display expensive items like jewellery and cameras
* Avoid empty streets at night
* Travel first class on the train
* Go out in groups in the evenings and catch a private taxi home
* Do not leave possessions inside the car where they can be seen
* Ask the school for advice if you are unsure about anything
