Masikhule Childcare is a registered non-profit organization that realized the need for better quality care for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in the townships and disadvantaged communities. They offer training in childcare skills to unemployed women, crèche workers and community workers in child development and stimulation.
Your volunteering time will be spent at Sikhutahle Day Care and Thabong Daily Care in Nomzamo, Strand. In 2006 Masikhule Childcare assisted 3 women to open these crèches. With some basic formal training and a staff of 5 helpers each, Muriel and Anastacia are taking care of about 150 kids, aged 7 months – 6 years. The children get 3 meals per day, which means not all the staff are assisting with the children as some have to perform kitchen duties. All kinds of volunteer support is needed. You could be an assistant teacher in the 4 – 6 year old group, or look after the babies if that is your preference.
The workday is from 9 am – 3pm, and you will work 5 days per week, from Monday to Friday.

The Cheetah Conservation program is situated in the magnificent mountain valleys of Stellenbosch on South Africa’s most famous wine route. This project aims to help in the conservation of the Cheetah in South Africa by helping out with the day to day care of the animals and helping to educate people, as well as to encourage a greater understanding of these magnificent animals.
Your work will consist of preparation of food for the cheetahs, taking care of the Anatolian dogs, cleaning up the feeding area and the holding enclosures, as well as hosting the projects guests (which includes introducing them to the cheetahs).
Since you will be working with the public, as well as animals, you need to be an outgoing and enthusiastic person with a sense of humour and a genuine compassion for animal welfare. A high level of English is required and we welcome international volunteers.
The workday is from 10 am – 5 pm (6 pm in the summer months), and you will work 5 days per week on a rotation basis.

3. THE AIDS AND HOSPICE SAFE HOUSE PROGRAMME
Founded in 1936, this home was originally created as a care centre for unwed mothers and their infants, and over the years has evolved into an organization offering shelter for abused, abandoned, HIV- positive, orphaned and terminally ill children.
In the early 1990′s an urgent need to care for children directly impacted by HIV/ AIDS was identified. This focus included the establishment of a pediatric AIDS hospice, the first in South Africa at that time (1996), offering specialized pediatric, palliative care 24 hours a day. Education is a high priority and in 2009 an ECD (Early Childhood Development Centre)was opened to implement a range of developmental and educational programs.
The Aids orphanage and Hospice opened in July 2003 in Somerset West, Western Cape and provides residential care for up to 40 children (from birth to 6 years). They ensure that the children’s physical and medical needs are being attended to.
Their objective is to create self-sufficiency and competency for children and families living with HIV and AIDS, in order to reduce the incidence of AIDS-related child abandonment and neglect. This is done through:
# Palliative care for terminally ill children
# Respite care for children who are acutely ill
# Residential care for chronically ill abandoned babies and children
# Emergency place of safety for children (birth – 6 years) who have been abandoned, orphaned or abused.
# Implementation of Antiretroviral therapy (ARV) for HIV positive children
# To recruit and screen families willing to care for special need children, HIV positive children and children on ARV.
Volunteer Involvement
Volunteers assist the hospice staff by feeding, stimulating and playing with the children. They also accompany the children to the clinic, or on outings. In the mornings you could also be assisting the qualified teacher in the nursery school with the planned daily activities.
The workday is from 9 am – 4 pm , Monday to Friday. Extra off-time can be arranged to allow for a long week-end to do a tour/sightseeing out of town.
Minimum stay: 6 weeks
